WHAT TO WEAR GUIDE

Let’s make sure your style shines through while creating a look that complements your session without being too “matchy.” Here’s how to get it right:

So let’s find your own style to incorporate into your session!

First and foremost, wear clothing suitable for the
current season and temperatures!

Wearing clothes that fit the season and the weather is essential. In the summer, think light and airy—sundresses, short sleeves, and sandals. In the cooler months, keep cozy with sweaters and boots. Wearing clothes suited to the weather ensures you're comfortable and confident, and it’ll show in your photos.

Find a color palette that you love. Then an outfit you feel confident and beautiful in!

Choose colors that you feel amazing in and that flatter your skin tone. Once you have your base, coordinate with complementary shades. The goal is to harmonize without looking too uniform. Neutral tones with a few pops of color work great, or you can go for a palette of different shades of the same color.

Patterns Are Fun—In Moderation
If you love patterns, try to limit them to one person or one piece. When incorporating a patterned outfit, use the colors within it to guide the choices for the rest of the group. This keeps the look cohesive without being overwhelming.

Including your horse or dog? Let’s coordinate your colors!

Yes to…

  • Wearing season-appropriate clothing ensures a more comfortable and enjoyable session, keeping you in line with the current temperatures.

  • Earth tones are ideal for outdoor portraits and harmonize beautifully with your horse or dog’s natural colors.

  • Choose equine-safe outfits that protect both you and your horse, including proper footwear and helmets for minors to help prevent any unfortunate accidents.

Please AVOID…

  • Avoid white outfits or dresses, as they easily show every bit of dirt or slobber!

  • Steer clear of black clothing when being photographed against a black background—it can make you blend into the backdrop, leaving just your head visible.

  • Limit patterns, especially if you’re photographing with a paint, pinto, Appaloosa, or a dog with a merle or party coat, as their natural patterns will already stand out!

Take a look at the color suggestions below to find the best match for your horse! If a color isn't listed, it's best to avoid it. For paints, pintos, or Appaloosas, choose colors that match their most dominant shade and skip the patterns—your horse is already wearing one!

Don’t be afraid to layer your clothing and add accessories!

Add dimension to your outfit by incorporating accessories like a scarf, cardigan, jacket, or hat. These small touches can pull your look together and make it feel complete!

By changing up accessories and layering pieces, you can create multiple looks from the same outfit—perfect for sessions that only allow one outfit change. Accessories can also serve as fun props to interact with during your session. Adding variety with different textures in your clothing and accents is especially effective for creating depth and interest in black and white photos.

Season-Appropriate Clothing: Make sure you’re dressed comfortably for the weather.

  1. Earth Tones: These natural colors look fantastic outdoors and blend beautifully with your horse or dog’s coat.

  2. Equine-Safe Outfits: Prioritize safety with appropriate shoes and gear, especially around horses. Helmets are a must for minors.

Dresses: What to Do and What to Avoid

When selecting a dress, be mindful of the style and fit. If you're uncomfortable with movement, like spinning, walking quickly, or sitting without the dress riding up, it’s probably too short. Short or low-cut dresses can limit your posing options, which may result in fewer final images.

If you plan to sit on or ride your horse in the dress, ensure it has enough flare at the bottom or features a long slit in the middle or side. This allows the fabric to drape nicely over the horse’s withers and rump. While mermaid-style dresses may be stylish, they aren't safe for riding.

> > Most importantly, practice wearing the dress around your horse beforehand, as many horses may react to fluttery fabric. Safety always comes first! < <
